Kilpi

Turning Kilpi Shield on and off, getting a blocked site back, and why ads can still show in Safari.

Get in touch

Kilpi is made by a small studio in Helsinki, and the support inbox is read by the person who wrote the app. Write to [email protected] and you will normally hear back within two working days.

It helps to include your iOS version, your iPhone or iPad model, whether you use Guardian or Expert mode, and the site or app that misbehaves.

Turning the shield on

  1. Open Kilpi and tap the shield.
  2. Read the explanation and tap Continue.
  3. When iOS asks to add a VPN configuration, tap Allow.

A VPN icon shows in the status bar while Kilpi Shield is on. The VPN runs on your device: there is no VPN server, and your IP address doesn't change.

Common questions

How do I turn Kilpi Shield off?

Tap the shield again, or use the Kilpi Shield switch in Settings. It stays off until you turn it on again.

A site or app doesn't load

One of your protection lists may have blocked a name it needs. Open What did you block? in Guardian mode, or the Block Log in Expert mode, find the site and tap Allow this site.

Ads still show in Safari

With iCloud Private Relay on, Safari looks sites up through Apple's relay, so Kilpi Shield can't filter Safari. Turn on Kilpi's Safari extension (Settings › Apps › Safari › Extensions), or turn Private Relay off. Apps that use their own encrypted DNS also bypass the shield.

Kilpi Shield turned off when I used another VPN

iOS runs one VPN at a time, so turning on another VPN app replaces Kilpi Shield. Turn the shield back on in Kilpi when you're done with the other VPN.

How do I remove Kilpi completely?

Delete the app. Its VPN configuration and all of its data go with it.

Your data

Kilpi has no account and no servers of its own, and nothing about your browsing is sent to us. Lookups that aren't blocked go only to the encrypted DNS provider you choose. The privacy policy sets out exactly what is handled and where.

Reporting a problem

Bug reports are welcome. Include the steps that led to the problem if you can reproduce it. Kilpi can also make a diagnostic file when you ask for one: the basic file has no domains or rules in it unless you opt in, and it only leaves your device if you share it.

Reporting a security issue

Security problems go to [email protected] rather than the support inbox, so they get looked at first. The security page says what to send and what we do with it.
