PlantCoach vs. Planta, Greg and PictureThis

PlantCoach gives one watering answer each morning in a single digest instead of a reminder per plant, is free for five plants, and collects no data. Here is how it compares with Planta, Greg and PictureThis.

By Stationify Oy, Helsinki · Updated 17 October 2026

In short: PlantCoach gives one answer each morning for every plant, water today or skip, in a single digest instead of a notification per plant, and “Water all” ticks exactly the plants in a room that need it. It skips outdoor watering when rain is likely, pauses feeding in the dormant season, learns to wait longer when you tap “Not today”, and identifies plants and explains its answers on your iPhone. Every feature is free for up to five plants; Pro is US$29.99 a year or US$59.99 once. There’s no account, no analytics and no tracking: its App Store label reads “Data Not Collected”, and your plants sync only through your own iCloud.

PlantCoach is on the App Store as PlantCoach: AI Plant Care, for iPhone.

Prices are US App Store prices checked on 17 October 2026. They change, and other storefronts differ. Where an App Store listing shows several prices for the same plan, we say so rather than quote one. Facts about other apps come from their own websites, help centres, privacy policies and App Store listings; App Store privacy labels are each developer’s own statement.

PlantCoach vs. Planta

Planta is the best-known plant-care app. It schedules watering, fertilising, misting, repotting and cleaning, adapts to your local weather and home, has a light meter and Dr. Planta for pests and problems, and lets someone else care for your plants while you’re away. It runs on Android too. If you want every care task scheduled, Planta does more.

Where PlantCoach differs:

  • Fewer notifications. Planta reminds you per task. PlantCoach sends one morning digest that names the plants that need water, room by room, and “Water all” marks a whole room done.
  • Water a room in one go. “Water all” opens ticked for exactly the plants that need water and leaves the rest unticked, because watering a plant that didn’t ask for it is the mistake PlantCoach exists to prevent.
  • What’s free. PlantCoach’s free version has every feature for up to five plants, including photo identification. Planta’s identification, light meter and non-watering schedules need Premium.
  • No account. Planta needs one and stores data in the US. Its privacy policy names Amplitude, Braze and Google Ads Remarketing, and its App Store label lists purchases, identifiers and usage data as used to track you. PlantCoach has no account and no analytics; your plants sync only through your own iCloud.

PlantCoach vs. Greg

Greg is the closest to PlantCoach in idea: it’s about getting watering right, not about identification. It measures your pot and the distance to the window from a photo and tells you how much water to give, adjusted for the season and your weather. It also has a community feed.

Where PlantCoach differs:

  • When, not how much. Greg tells you how much to pour. PlantCoach answers whether to water today, and learns to wait longer for a plant when you tap “Not today” on a reminder.
  • Free reminders. Greg’s developer says care reminders are part of SUPER Greg. PlantCoach’s daily answer and digest are free for up to five plants.
  • Outdoor plants and rooms. PlantCoach skips outdoor watering when rain is likely, pauses feeding in the dormant season, and imports room names from HomeKit.
  • No account. Greg collects your name and email; PlantCoach collects nothing.

PlantCoach vs. PictureThis

PictureThis is one of the most downloaded plant apps. It identifies over 400,000 species, diagnoses diseases with treatment advice, flags toxic plants and weeds, and offers chat with experts. If you need to know what a plant is, or what’s wrong with it, PictureThis is the stronger choice.

Where PlantCoach differs:

  • Built for watering. PlantCoach is built around one daily decision for each plant you own, not around identification.
  • On the device. PlantCoach identifies plants and works out each answer on your iPhone. PictureThis’s App Store label lists purchases, identifiers and usage data as used to track you.
  • Explains itself. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, on-device AI explains each answer in plain words.
  • Your plants follow you, without an account. Plants, photos and history sync through your own private iCloud.
  • A one-time price. PlantCoach Pro is US$29.99 a year, or US$59.99 once if you’d rather not subscribe.

What PlantCoach doesn’t do

To be fair about it:

  • No disease diagnosis or light meter. Planta and PictureThis have both.
  • A smaller plant library. 61 plants have their own care guide; others use the guide for their plant type. PictureThis identifies far more species.
  • It doesn’t measure soil. PlantCoach estimates watering need from rules; it doesn’t read soil moisture or tell you how much water to give.
  • No Android, iPad or web. PlantCoach is for iPhone, with iOS 26 or later.
  • No community or shared care. Family Sharing shares a Pro purchase, not your plants.

Common questions

Is there a plant care app that doesn't send a reminder for every plant?

PlantCoach sends one morning digest naming the plants that need water today, grouped by room, with an optional evening digest. Planta, Greg and PictureThis remind you per plant or per task.

Is PlantCoach a good Planta alternative?

If you use Planta mainly for watering and want fewer notifications and no account, yes, and PlantCoach is free for five plants. If you rely on Planta’s light meter, Dr. Planta or reminders for misting and repotting, PlantCoach doesn’t have those.

Which plant app identifies plants without uploading photos?

PlantCoach identifies plants on your iPhone: species suggestions on iOS 27 with Apple Intelligence, a broader plant type otherwise. You can also type the plant’s name.

Which plant app is best for diagnosing a sick plant?

PictureThis and Planta (Dr. Planta, in Premium) both diagnose pests and diseases from a photo. PlantCoach doesn’t diagnose; it decides when to water.
