PlantCoach

One verdict a day, rooms and groups, feeding and digests — and what to do when the answer looks wrong.

Get in touch

PlantCoach is made by a small studio in Helsinki, and the support inbox is read by the person who wrote the app. Write to [email protected] and you will normally hear back within two working days.

If a verdict looks wrong, it helps enormously to include your iOS version, your device, the species PlantCoach identified, whether the plant is tagged indoor or outdoor, and when you last watered it.

How PlantCoach works

Most plant apps give you a schedule and then a reminder per plant. PlantCoach gives you a decision. Each morning an on-device agent weighs the species, where the plant lives, how long it has been since you last watered, and — for outdoor plants — the forecast, then commits to one answer: water today, or skip. There is nothing to configure, and there is never more than one digest in the morning and, if you ask for it, one in the evening.

Getting started

  1. Add your first plant. Snap a photo and on-device Vision identifies the species — no upload, no account — or pick it from the library by hand.
  2. Say indoor or outdoor. This matters more than anything else. Indoor plants get dry-down intervals tuned to the species; outdoor plants read the Apple WeatherKit forecast and skip a watering when rain is coming.
  3. Set the last-watered date. If you have had the plant a while, backdate it — the first verdict is only as good as that date.
  4. Put it in a room. Living Room, Kitchen, Bedroom, Balcony — and while you are adding a plant you can import your HomeKit room names in one tap, so the morning digest tells you where to go.
  5. Allow notifications. The daily digest is the product — set its time under Settings → Daily verdict reminder. Without it you are opening the app to ask a question PlantCoach was going to answer for you.

Watering, rooms and groups

How do I water a whole room at once?

Any room or group with more than one plant due today shows a Water all N button on its section header. It opens a sign-off sheet ticked for exactly the plants that need water, with the rest of the room listed underneath, unticked. Watering a plant that didn't ask for it is the mistake PlantCoach exists to prevent, so topping everything up stays an explicit choice.

What is the difference between a room and a group?

A room says where a plant lives; a group says how you think about it — “Succulents”, “Fussy ones”, “Mum's”. A plant lives in one room but can be in as many groups as you like, and each group gets its own section and its own sign-off.

I watered a plant that PlantCoach said to skip

Log it anyway — the detail view has a watering button and a backdate sheet. The next verdict works from the real last-watered date, so nothing gets confused. Consistently watering earlier than PlantCoach suggests is worth telling us about.

The species identification was wrong

Edit the plant and set the species by hand — the dry-down interval follows the species, so this is worth fixing. Identification runs entirely on-device, which means it is private but not omniscient; a clear, well-lit photo of the leaves helps most.

Feeding and reminders

How does feeding work?

PlantCoach tracks fertilising alongside watering, on an interval that suits the species, and pauses through the dormant season — feeding a resting plant does more harm than missing a feed entirely. Feeds appear in the same digest as watering, not as a separate stream of notifications.

Can I have a second reminder later in the day?

Yes, and only one. Settings → Add an evening digest, then assign any room, group or individual plant to morning or evening. Two a day is the ceiling: there is no per-plant reminder, and there never will be.

I'm not getting the digest

Check iOS Settings → Notifications → PlantCoach, and check that a Focus or Scheduled Summary isn't holding it. If nothing is due, there is nothing to send — that is the app working, not failing.

Outdoor plants aren't reading the weather

WeatherKit needs a location. Allow location access, and confirm the plant is tagged outdoor — an indoor plant deliberately ignores the forecast.

Sync, subscription and billing

Plants and history sync across your own Apple devices through your private iCloud. Nothing reaches us or any third party. The free tier covers five plants; PlantCoach Pro lifts the cap at $3.99 per month, $29.99 per year with a 7-day free trial, or $59.99 once for lifetime. Family Sharing is enabled.

My plants aren't on my other device

Both devices need to be signed into the same Apple Account with iCloud Drive on, and iCloud enabled for PlantCoach under iOS Settings → your name → iCloud. The first sync can take a few minutes.

How do I cancel, or get a refund?

Subscriptions are handled by Apple, not by us. Cancel under iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions, at least 24 hours before the period ends. Refunds go through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com — we have no ability to issue them.

I paid but Pro isn't unlocked

Open the paywall and tap Restore purchases, and check you are signed in with the same Apple Account that bought it. If it still won't unlock, email us the date of purchase.

Your data

PlantCoach has no account and no analytics. Identification and the daily verdict both run on your iPhone, and your plants and photos sync only through your own private iCloud — we never receive a copy, so we cannot retrieve anything for you. The only network calls the app makes are to Apple WeatherKit for the forecast and Apple StoreKit for your subscription. The privacy policy sets out exactly what is and is not handled.

Reporting a problem

Bug reports are genuinely welcome and are usually acted on. Include the steps that led to the problem if you can reproduce it. If the app crashed, opting in to share diagnostics with developers in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements sends Apple an anonymised crash report we can read.
